Not to sound crass but that simply sound broken. Seems like some sort of mechanical failure. It could be something simple and easily fixed so if it is under warranty I would send it back to Kodak and if not a local service shop could take care of it. It really could be any number of things from very simple like particals on the zoom sensor that cause it to retract or a simple internal software issue.
