GOOD and BAD
( - 3/24/06)The technical range and capabilites of the camera are brilliant....
Just all the stuff it can do.
BUT - In Kodak having gone into a suspect deal with Apple computers for the use of the MINIMALIST version of Quicktime, which takes bloated file sizes for movies, which you can't do anything with by the way, no editing, no saving / converting in other formats that everyone else uses (i.e. MPG)..
But the KODAK mamagement decided to do a scummy deal with the Apple computer people, in that they give you a free and never ending set of NAG SCREENS to PAY lots of money, to upgrade from the crappy and basic player to the "professional" quicktime suite; so that you can edit / save / convert into other formats..
This just smacks of "product lock in" which is pure scummyness on the part of Kodak.
As the management / sales team of Kodak have done the snouts in the trough deal with Apple Computers to give you crap software with the upgrade nag screens, so Kodak can get another commission and Apple get more money from you, I am going to suggest that you buy a camera from a company that doesn't pull scumbag antics to screw you over with.
If they are only going to provide movie editing software, on the basis, that you go out and pay MORE after buying the camera, then I suggest you go else where - and get a QUALITY camera, with quaility movie editing software - that comes as part of the deal.
You know every time I have to do any editing of the Apple Computers Quicktime movies take with my camera - it really really shits me.
One has to convert it to an AVI, then one can convert that in MPEG or WMV... using other peoples software.
The Quicktime software is unreliable - it's crap.
But for those of us afflicted with the bought camera, there is a great alternative.
Go here, and get QUICKTIME ALTERNATIVE.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm
It does all the stuff that the basic quick time software shold be doing - without paying for the hugely expensive software upgrade.
My surmisation?
The technical capapbilites of the camera - it's brilliant; it's really really good.
The software that comes with it - i.e. Apple Quicktime in a crippled an minimalist version - that's crappy softrware - and the deal Kodak has done with Apple Computers - for the $$$$$ upgrade to some movie editing software - that's the scummiest thing ever - and they expect me to be thrilled about this? Never..
The build quality on the battery door etc., is really scummy.
Make your choices...
If you get a brand new one cheap at 50% of the current RRP or less, and get "quick time alternative", go for it.
If not, give Kodak and it's products the arse.
