Performs better in some areas than in others

( - 5/15/06)

In general, this is a pretty functional camera for the average user. I haven't had any problems with it, accessories are easy to come by, has excellent battery life. Using fine compression, I generally get very nice photos and have enlarged several to 8x10 and have been impressed with the quality of these.

Weak points include poor performance in lower light conditions, where my old 35mm film camera would have performed excellently. Photos in these conditions come out very under-exposed and grainy.

The macro setting is also a disappointment. I wish I could manual focus, if it's going to do such a poor job on its own. I love taking macro shots but the auto focus is EXTREMELY finicky in this setting and almost never focuses unless 12 inches or more from the subject. If I can't get in close, what's the use of a macro setting?

However, I stand by my 4 star rating. In most applications, this camera has been very good to me and I have been impressed with the results.
