The bad news is that this means the lens alignment of your camera is messed up and it will take repair service to fix it. The cost of this might be equivalent to replacing the camera- I would give Kodak a call and see what they're willing to do for you.

Here is a similar discussion for the same problem/ same camera:

I've not seen the guts of this one but if its anything like the dx3900 damp may be the cause, the fault described is a little different from the problem you get with the 3900 as it will just power down with no error message.
If your not too worried about the camera give it a good hard slap, the dx range was notorious for jammed lenses and shutter, being just a thin sliver of plastic any damp tends to make them stick together, so far Ive "fixed" 5 dx3900's by giving it a good hard slap, hold the camera and bash the edge next to the lens against the palm of you hand as hard as you can, one I did have to get a little more medieval on and bashed aginst a bit of carpet on the bench.. but it worked... might be worth a go if the next step is the bin...

Cool glad to hear it,

something i forgot for others, it may also be the lens contacts or grit in the gears
open it up on the side of the lens you will see a row of thin gold coloured contacts that report the lens position back to the cpu sometimes these get dirty or bent.

on the side of the lens is a motor, look where the gear meets the lens and use a pin to flip out any grit that is stuck in the teeth.
Its very unlikely the lens is "out of alignment" this just cant happen unless its been dropped or bashed, in which case it may be broken.

All be...Kudos to Brenda and Jay (origin of the post?).

That pricey 3x optical lens on my wife's Kodak EasyShare v530 (lens mfg: Schneider-Kreuznach) has been stuck open for nearly a month. Error e45 on the display. I told her to google it, but she'd sat on it all this time.

Took matters into my own hands. Very first link led me to this forum. After reading the related posts, I listened closely to the camera. When I powered it on, I could actually hear the gears spinning but without closing. A few hard smacks later....Voila. Problem fixed.

Took less time to fix (incl. research) than it's taken to write this reply.

Hopefully, other Kodak customers will benefit and the company will fix this manufacturing flaw in future versions. Great camera otherwise. Was going to by one for myself. Now I'm reconsidering. Those Exilims are pretty slick.

Thank you to Jay and Brenda.. I also googled the error code E45 and found this site. It took me less than a minute to smack the side of the camera and I also heard the sound of the gears spinning (like Ed G.) Thanks again!!!

We have two 530's both had the dreaded E45 last year, one after an ocean swim and the other fell 18". Under warranty so shipped them off and back they came from NJ working just great. Until today - one broke again.

Jay your method worked like a charm. A bit hesitant to smack but it WORKED!!!

THANK YOU

My friend is going camping this weekend and he was packing items and lo and behold, his Kodak EasyShare kept showing the E45 error everytime he turned it on. He called the Kodak phone number and the lady told him to send it in and it will cost a minimum of 85 dollars for repair. As he was telling me this on the telephone, (10 minutes ago ), I googled the error code and found this website. He was in the process of starting to take the camera apart with a screwdriver and then I told him to "smack" the camera a few times. No pun intended but he is now a Happy Camper. The error code dissapeared and he tried it a few more times and it still works! Thanks for the help!

I have a v550 with the same problem. I took it apart and checked the gears but it didn't work so I put it back together and tried the slamming method. (I first had to take out the drive gear and pull it to the open position) (Taking it apart to remove the drive gear is a chinese jigsaw puzzle. I don't reccomend it for the faint of heart). It took some playing but I got it to work. At first it just opened part way and then closed. You have to have the lens closed when the camera thinks it's closed. I had to force the lens closed a little while it was opening to adjust the actual location to match where the camera thought it was. I finally got it to stay open but the zoom wouldn't work so I "adjusted" it a little at a time until I got lucky and the two worlds aligned.

Ahh. I was freaking out when I reliesed I broke my moms camera!
I tried to turn it on but the lens was stuck! and I made a horrible noise. But with All of your guy's awnsers helped me soo much.
I would have been in soo much trouble without these awnsers.
I thought "slamming the side of the camera" would never work.
But what do you know I fixed the camera in less than thirty seconds. And it didint cost anything.
Thank you all soo much. :]

Well along with what seems like every other person that's bought a Kodak camera mine is stuck too. I've been slapping it for a good 20 minutes and no joy. Kodak must make some pretty crappy cameras if this is happening to so many people.

Ok, I have a V530 and first the lens was stuck and the whole #E45 came on, and the users guide said zilch about how ti fix it, soooooooooo I took it apart, got the lens to go back but still no luck with the #E45.....I pretty much bought 2 other camera since, I bought this kodak one 2 christmas agos...and after the #E45 the next Xmas i bought a Canon, which is wonderful but my son broke it...now that one doesnt work but this year for my bday hubbie bought a professional canon....which i love...but now 2 years later im looking at my 2 broken cameras wanting to fix them....my professional isnt too big to bring everywhere and cant video record....I love the kodak for the fast click when taking a picture, the big screen and the size of it..mines red, and my other canon i love it too...so im determined to fix them...BUT im noticing that this camera (like many other things these days ) should be recalled....

Ok so I tried the smacking and well I was scared looking at the screen turn rainbow colors but than my lens was working but after a few more smacks nothing happens, now i hear the clicking grrr noise everyone is hearing but still the #E45 and now my palm is red and hurts.....whats the next step dont know, didnt pay much for this camera and dont want to spend much to fix it...so I guess ill keep smacking it.

Had the error code 45 and a few others since my daughter took it too the beach and got sand in it...had tried to take it apart and got quite a shock...minor electrocution...so I don't suggest you do that! (yes I took the batteries out)...anyway it was working sometimes but would get stuck etc...I went into a camera shop, they suggested I use the compressed air...bad idea! It was completely stuck! But alas, I found this site and smacked it a few good ones on the desk and YEAH! it works again!! Thanks so much for the "technical" advice.

Oh, my gosh! My camera, Kodak Easyshare cx7430 has been sitting around for almost 2 yrs with the #E45 error message on it. I ended up buying a Nikon Coolpix. I was cleaning and came across the Kodak box. I took the camera out and keyed the error message on the internet and came across this site. I took the camera out, smacked the lens in my palm and it worked. Good thing I kept everything that went with the camera. Thank you, Jay!!!

Awesome!!! I just had this problem on my V603 for the past week and was dreading having to get it fixed, but I finally googled the E45 and got here. Well, the smacking wasn't really working, but apparently that was because I kept turning the camera on to smack it. Bad idea. Kept it off, smacked it a few times and viola! Cheers for the link everyone. Just bought the c360 as part of a job lot and it worked fine for about 10mins. I uploaded some photos onto the pc and when I turned it back on I got the error 45. Imagine my horror when after looking at the kodak website I would have had to pay a lot to get it fixed. The wife was a bit dubious but after a good slap all,s well. I slapped the camera not the wife.

Thanks very much.

I was all worried that the camera was ruined after I tried turning it on and that E45 error showed up. I was already getting the irresponsible 15-year-old speech from my parents but after I smacked the side of the lens it was able to close and open. The only problem is that when i try to turn it off it still doesn't go all the way...anybody have any suggestions as to what i can do?

As well as the Models mentioned this 'smacking' fix worked on my Kodak DX7440 which started displaying
the E45 error a week ago with the lense stuck open. I was already in the process of looking at another
camera when I decided to Google the E45 code and found this page. Drastic measures but what a money
saver when it works. Thank you whoever thought this one up.

I'm going crazy with my LS443!! My lens won't open, just makes a bunch of noise when you turn it on,, and after a few seconds, cuts itsself off. But nothing shows up on the screen. No error. Doesn't light up at all. I decided to give it a couple whacks. Shutter door opened!, and it cut off,, whacked it again,, its closed! etc etc./ As of now, its open completely, have whacked it about 10 times,, my hand hurts!! and my desk has a dent in it and still no camera working!! :( Looks like I'm one of the unlucky ones! . Contacted kodak about getting it fixed, which its now too old to be repaired, but hey, they said they'll give me 15% off a new camera. woohoo!!! makes me want to run out and spend my money again on kodak!! ,,,,, NOT!!!

My LS443 has been sitting around since... 2004. Yah 4 years. One of my kids knocked milk and my camera went flying as i tried to save it from the white milky flow... well, I could have sent it to kodak for repair, but since it was impact related and not warranty I went through my homeowners, paid the difference and replaced it with a Minolta 7hi, that I just found out was recalled for ccd sensor issues (shipped it off TODAY... has been dead for 2 years). I have a Nikkon coolpix that I have been less than happy with, but have been making due.

So I slammed the kodak on my hand... nothing. Harder... nothing... took a book and slammed the camera down on it. SHAZAM! it worked... I figured, what did i have to lose, so I really SLAMMED IT!!

SO, in a matter of one day, I figured out how to fix my dud Kodak, and learned about a recall on my minolta! YAHOO, I will have my 2 favorite cameras again!!

:)

I am so happy...

wow thanks! that really worked, my camera has been broken for about 6 months now with the screen open. it happened before and it fixed itself when i accidentally dropped it. i had tried to slap it before.. and again, for users DONT GIVE UP :) continue slapping it when its off until it fixes itself, first i had white lines on the screen and then it completely worked. i had also tries to take it to a kodak shop but they had no clue what was wrong with it, they tried changing the memory card but this didn't help in any way. seriously, it works

It worked for me, too, after about 10 tries and 1 relapse. Weird. I had to switch to off, take the battery out (to get the message to disappear) then slap it or throw it against the carpet, turn it back on (or the gears wouldn't start up again). After about 8 tries it worked and then went back to the error message. I did it a couple more times and it worked again.

Hi all - I used my Kodak v603 in Miami - Too hot here - When in the beach it stopped to work, with the lens in out position and the E45 Error when turning it on. As I didn't see that site yet, I thought it was about the heat and put it in front of the car's air conditioned. After 10 minutes it back to works again. Today, in a restaurant, it lost the lens's focus and back the the &*%&*&* E45 Error. I'm trying the slap method now but not works yet. :-(

It really works. I have V570. Dropped it in water and got jammed the lens. E45 error can only be fixed by giving a SLAPS.

thanks Jay

ok my names adam, im 13 and my dad has a easy share Ls443. it had never taken any damage and its about 7 years old. it dosn't take a charge throught the base or plug. but somehow i pluged it in agian and it charged.

the light sensor is off, i checked the manuel, and its not dirty. the settings are fine, but any time taking a still outside the white is way the hell too high, everything is light blue and white, and all glared.

i thought ,well i can take pictures inside (inside were normal) , and videos, so cool somthing is better than nothing i went online to check if there were any firmware updates(it was1.01 i think) the update was 1.03. i followed every instructin as of "meathod two" in the online instructions at kodak.com

i turned it on after i put the firmware on, no instructions appeared, and the lens stuck out, and the motor buzzed in a low pitch 3 times loudly, witch, it never did that before.

it shows on the lcd "camera error #E45 see users guide"

i found this page and this is where i am now.

luckily, my dad knows it wasn't me who caused this disaster known as E45.

any suggestions?

please help

My V610 Dule lens gave me the E45. Something sounded like it was trying to turn when I turned it on then e45
I was really depressed because I loved the 10X of this model.
I whacked the camera as I turned it on, Voila!
I could kiss you!

I took the advise of banging my V 603 flat on the floor (pretty hard) and IT Worked!!!! Had nothing to loose as a newer better camera is now cheaper to by then to send this one out for repairs.
I slapped it square on the back on a carpeted floorseveral times while truning it on and off.

Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My 4 year old dropped the camera this morning on our tile floor. I was so upset with it being so close to Christmas and the thought of not having a camera. But, I googled it and Voila! Here I am - I tried smacking it really hard. It didn't work the first couple of times (I probably didn't smack it hard enough) but on the 3-4th try it retracted back in and works! Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you SO much!

Thank goodness for google as it led me here to this site.
Like the one post said I had nothing to lose as my choices were $150 to Kodak to repair or buy a new one at the same cost.
This worked like a charm - thank you so much Jay.

A good swift slap of the camera on the side worked like a charm. This camera has been sitting for three years inop and now it works like new.

Another satisfied "smacker." Saved my camera as well. I also think it was the reason the batteries were not lasting as long. They were working too hard to overcome whatever was stuck in there. I hope to see them lasting longer. Thanks!

short version: smacking the side of the camera WORKS.

extended review: i'll admit that i was super reluctant to take jays advice. i bought my camera in april of 2005 and have loved it ever since. there are definitely better cameras out there now, but this camera has given me some of the best pictures ive ever seen.

the error occurred without notice, i had LITERALLY just turned my camera off and back on and it erred. this was the first forum that i found. i read it over and figured that if it worked for everyone else, i might have a shot.

i gave it a couple of love taps on the left side and it worked!

i suggest you try this before getting it repaired.
-paul

OMG, I SOOOO had to comment on this... This was the first site tha came on when I googled ERROR # E45 and I was too, not liking the idea of smacking the camera, and searching on google for other options to do, but I after I got tired of searching I gave up and started smacking it, and tried for like half an hour...it was not working, and I was not even thinking about opening my camera 'cause I could never fix it that way,

I was already filling up the process on the kodak website when I read some more of the comments on here and saw that the lens should be closed (you can see if it's open or not by just noticing how big they are, like your eyes pupil, if they're big they're open, if they're small, they're closed)

then I turned on the camera and started to notice when was the moment the lens would be closed, in the whole starting process, when the lens were closed I smacked the camera real good against my wooden table and IT WORKED!

I'm soooo glad, I didn't want to spend money on repairing it, much less get a new camera 'cause I love this camera so much...

thanks to anyone that helped, hope my experience can help somebody too!

edit: Just so you know, I have a kodak Z730
