Why P880 has noise?

The noise it makes and keeps making whenever you handle it. As soon as you change its orientation , it will make a cracking noise.

I have to say, I haven't heard of this. Does it sound like anything in particular- gears grinding, something electrical, etc?

Yes, I too have the same problem with auto/preset modes in my new P880. Though in manual modes (P/A/S/M) I don't get this. While shooting videos this grinding noise is annoying and every time I have to set my focus setting to "Manual" to mute this noise. But then even here, I can't use zoom while recording something, coz the mike actually picks up the sound of lens moving. Sounds like a manufacturing defect.

I have heard of the problem of the zoom during movie recording causing noise- unfortunately that's not a defect, it's just a pain in the rear. It's also why most digital cameras do not offer optical zoom in movie mode, because that is hard to get around. I wasn't sure if the original poster was talking about noise shooting video or still photos.

The P880 is one of the few purely mechanical zoom lenses on a digital camera with movie mode. As a result, the zoom can be used in movie mode because there is no zooming motor to make any noise for the mike to record. You might want to change sound parameters in the camera set up menu. If that doesn't work, then I suggest that you take the camera back to the dealer and ask them to take a look. It shouldn't make any grinding noises under any normal circumstance!

The noise you hear is the auto-focus system. It's absolutly normal. You can disable autofocus when record sound to avoid the noise.

Jorge is right, it is the auto focus making that noise. You can disable it by changing the focus to "Single AF" in the menu under "AF control". Now you wont hear that noise until you press the shutter half way when focusing on a subject. Incidentally, this option is only available in the more advanced modes(PASM), so if you are shooting in auto, you will have to live with it, but it is perfectly normal for this camera.
