Can't focus

When I got this camera, it seemed ok, but the picture wasn't very sharp for 6.0 megapixels. Now, after fooling around with the settings a little, every picture I take has the "red hand" on it, which means it's out of focus, even on a tripod with autofocus is set to Continuous AF. I've tried everything, but it still won't take a clear picture. I'm ready to try a new camera.
