How do I charge the battery that came with the camera

I have the older DX6490 and it came with a battery charger. This one doesn't have one. Does it charge via the USB cable?

No, it can only be charged via the AC Adapter/battery charger from what I read on the KODAK FAQ. It should have come with a battery charger. If it didn't, you may have fallen victim to "gray market" merchandise.

If something is gray market, it means that - although you may have gotten a great deal on it - it doesn't come with a warranty that will be honored here in this country, or other standard accesories like a battery charger, or manual. Which means if something goes wrong with the camera, you'll either have to send it to China to repair or pay to have it fixed yourself.

Be warned.

Actually, and unusually, this camera shipped out without a charger! This is according to dcresource.com review. You have a choice of: 1) buying a Kodak lithium battery (KLIC 8000) and charger (K7500-C or K7600-C); 2) buying some really good NiMH batteries and charger; 3) buy a rechargeable CR-V3 battery (lithium ion) and charger such as these--
http://www.onlybatteries.com/showitem.asp?ItemID=12365.15&cat1=53&uid=1703
http://www.amazon.com/Hitech-Rechargable-CR-V3-Battery-Charger/dp/B000N251DG
Since this camera was designed for the lithium battery it shipped with, you may find NiMH's don't do as well as the rechargeable Lithium battery because of the voltage difference. (The camera may think the NiMH's are low or dead before they really are).
Good luck and next time before you buy click on the "Resources" button near the bottom right corner of this page and research your intended purchase thoroughly.

I forgot to list another option for you. You can buy a dock unit of some sort that the camera sits in and connects to power and your computer for downloading. It's available only from Kodak I believe.

Kodak is very skittish about what batteries should be used with their cameras. Any deviation from the recommendation could result, according to them, in lens errors or even damage to the camera. I recently chatted with a kodak specialist about this issue and he recommends changing your batteries to NiMh rechargeable batteries. These are the batteries that the camera is designed to use and using other types - like alkalines, can often cause the lens error to occur. If that doesn't work, then the camera indeed does need repair.

Rechargeable Ni-MH Batteries (AA Size): These Ni-MH AA batteries last up to twice as long as alkaline batteries when used in your Digital Camera - and you can recharge them up to 1000 times in our rapid charger.

Oxy-Alkaline Digital Camera Battery (AA Size).

CRV3 Lithium Batteries: A non-rechargeable battery designed specifically for today's feature-rich cameras. This battery is the obvious choice for speed performance, and long life. It delivers faster flash recycle times and lasts up to 10% longer than our previous design!

Ni-MH Rechargeable Battery Pack: Provides exceptional capacity with its 2.5 hour fast charge cycle time; can be recharged up to 1000 times in the EasyShare Camera Dock or EasyShare Rapid Charger,

This camera (along with many others) do not come with a rechargeable battery. It comes with a dispoasable battery. If you want a rechargeable battery for this camera, you will have to purchase it seperately.

The universal charger that you need is the Li-Ion Universal Battery Charger Kit K7600-C (~ $40).
The Li-Ion battery you should purchase is the KLIC-8000.

This is certainly not the cheap we to go, but it is the best way to go. I filled a 1 Gig card at Disneyland with the kids and only had to recharge them once (4 days in the park).

Great camera! Love the zoom while recording video feature. Resolution is great. Easyshare software does not get along with my Vista for some reason.

Happy Holidays,
Chris

WOW. It is unusual for all this to happen at once. Odd for new USB cable to be DOA short of physical damage.
Let's start with "Battery does not charge" - make sure the computer is turned on in order to put current to the USB to charge.
"Software does not launch" - sometimes you have to click on My Computer and go to the CD drive unit and double click as though to read the CD in order to get it started if it doesn't self start (My Toshiba is that way almost all the time).
Software upgrade not going to help until we get the CD software loaded (I think that's right - tho not totally certain).
Try those ideas and let me know what results. I'm available. Feed me more information and I will try again. :)

Chances are, you may have a switch in your OS that turns off USB ports as a power saving feature. Particularly in VISTA. Go into your hardware devices and check this out. I had a similar problem and once I disabled that power saving option, I had no trouble using my USB ports.

Chris, how many pictures did you get with your Z712?
What were you getting with Alkaline batteries. We seem to get about 30-40 pictures (mostly flash) on a set of Alkaline batteries. To me this seems a terrible design, maybe mine is defective.
We tried Energizer 2500mAh rechargeables and get even fewer pictures per charge. Does anyone have any experience I can compare to?

If you're using mostly flash, that's not too suprising. Charging those capacitors can really drain a battery in the short run. However, if you rest the batteries some between flashes, you end up able to take more photos. Think of it like running a race. If you keep sprinting, you get short of breath and have to stop. But if you slow down some, you can run further.

The 2500mAh rechargables may a few charge/discharge cycles before they are fully up to maximum capacity, too.

I have KLIC-8000 (Re-chargable battery for Z712IS digital camera), it is brand new one. Tried to charge it using USB cable connected to Computer without success. I have purchased KODAK USB AC Adapter, and instead of charging the battery it caused it to be totally drained?
Any idea how to charge the KLIC-8000 battery? is it possible to charge it from the computer using USB cable? what about the USB AC adapter (wall mounted) should it work?

Using USB to the computer may not be work. By default, there is a power management feature which turns off USB ports to conserve energy. It's a dumb idea, frankly. But to access it you right click on my computer, select properties. then device manager. right click each USB hub and select power mangement. uncheck the box that says "allow windows to turn off usb hub to conserve power." Do this for every hub.

Additionally, if relying on front USB ports, they may be getting less electricity than the rear.

James, silly question; do you work for Kodak?
Lets talk reality!
It seems the MOFO's @ Kodak designed a camera(Z[67]12) that needs to run on +2.8 volts.
Sure your average Alkaline is 1.55v x 2 = 3.1v to start, but quickly drops below 2.8v.
NOW they state we need to use their 3.7volt batteries @ $29.99 a set. Along with their Charger for $39.95.
Alkaline batteries taken out of my Z712 as DEAD work fine in every other device I own!!
There was no claim by Kodak that Alkaline's would not work until AFTER we bought our cameras.
Then they sell us a $50 package for a "Docking Station" that includes a battery that is not compatible with our camera and ask us to spend another $29.95 for the REAL battery that works for our camera!!!!
I think this is grounds for a class action suit.

If nothing else, I believe the environmentalists would have something to say about Kodak pushing worthless batteries out to the world via their "Docking Station" purchases so they can be thrown away by individuals!! Maybe it is a ploy to dispose of an over-stock of batteries without incurring hazardous waste charges?

I have purchased the KODAK charger and KODAK rechargable battery, but instead of charging it cause the battery to totally drain out. I checked that on 2 diffirent batteries.
The AA batteries barely enough for 50 pictures and Kodak non-rechargable battery good for less than 100 pictures even without using the flash. so in summary I had good deal on the camera and now need to pay (already spent more than $65 on batteries)

I just ordered 2 KLIC-8000 equiv batteries and a quick charger from Bestbatt.
Battery pack $9/each and charger $19.95.
For that price, (compared to $29.99/each for Kodak's) I figured why not have a spare charged and ready to go.
I should get them within a week. I'll post how they work out.

OK I will wait. Any idea why the wall mounted charger (Kodak) connection via USB cable to the battery with kodak KLIC-8000 battery could not charge charge the battery and even caused it to drain out, also could not charge from the computer even after turning the power on for all USB hubs. I tried all the combinations (Since I have 2 cameras and 2 batteries and 2 chargers) no success. I called kodak support and no thing (just told me to rub the battery contacts with dr cloth and install the easy share SW upgrade).
Thanks, Taisir

No Steve, I don't work for Kodak. In fact, I'm very critical of Kodak here on the boards, particularly of their crappy EasyShare software. One warning for you though ... though cheap batteries are very tempting, there is a glut of counterfeit batteries on the market which can cause cameras to overheat and the batteries can even explode. Make sure you buy from a top tier reputable manufacturer.

If you buy a kodak camera, do you have to install the EasyShare software also or can you use any picture software? I have an older version of EasyShare now and want to upgrade to the latest. Do I have to uninstall the old first?

First off, you don't need to install anything. The best solution is a USB memory card reader. Plug your SD card into it and your pc will read it as a drive. Then it's a simple drag and drop onto your mac and you can use any program you want to manage your photos. Then delete the photos USING THE PC and you're back to shooting pictures.

You can get them as cheap as $10 or less. Also, try Picasa. It's a much better photo management tool. And it's free!

As for upgrading the EasyShare software - the cleanest way is to uninstall the previous version first, but you don't have to. It should install right over it.

I cannot find KLIC-8000 locally. I can only find non-rechargeable CRV-3 but they would cost me a fortune.

I bought a KLIC-8000 equivalent and charger on ebay (for $5 + $11 S&H). It worked out OK so far. I am ordering another backup (for $1 + $6 S&H). (I should have bought both at the same time at around $20 total but it was my first purchase on ebay.)

2 x AA NiMH would not do the job as they added up only to 2.4 V under load. We kind of need 3 cells instead of 2 for the Z712 to work.

Before I received the KLIC-8000 equivalent I actually tried using my old cell phone Li-ion (3.6V) battery to power the camera via the 3V jack. I have several of those old batteries. The camera powered up and seemed OK.

However my cable was probably too long and thin to take a surge. The camera shut off on its own after taking a photo with flash, it ended up putting a corrupted image file on the memory card. I had to take the SD to the computer to clean up the corruption. Without a memory card reader, that might have been a serious issue.

A good battery is a must for this camera.

Steve F; I ordered that same combo from bestbatt and wouldn't advise it. The batteries had about an hours charge on them but wouldn't recharge. I don't know if it was faulty batteries or faulty charger; but since I tried 2 of the batteries, I would guess they were at fault. I also tried leaving the batteries in my camera nad charging them with the USB AC adaptor; no luck. What I have learned from several people is that what I purchased was basically just 2 AA batteries packaged to look like a lithium or nickel. Better luck to you

The battery that comes with this camera is NOT a recharging battery. Once it's dead, it's dead. And yes, mine died after around 30 photos, and I was totally frustrated. I previously had a C series Easy Share and it came with a recharging dock. I tried to put this camera on the prior dock and it wouldn't fit. Took it to Best Buy where I bought it and they showed me how to remove the old plastic insert for the C series and replace it with the new plastic dock insert that came in this box. Problem was, even with the new dock mount attached, it still didn't recharge. I called Kodak. It didn't recharge because it was NOT a rechargeable battery. I'm a slow learner. The compatible battery for the recharging dock is ONLY the KLIC-8000. And yes, with the right battery, mounted on the recharger, it charges just fine, and works for a long time without needing to recharge. When I am out on vacation and don't want to mess around lugging the recharging dock I use ENERGIZER Lithium Photo CRV3 batteries and dispose of them later. I was just as frustrated as the rest of you until I finally found the solution.

Thanks so much for this thread, I was scratching my head over this battery thing with this camera. I already had the charging Dock, and assumed that the battery that came with it would charge, but no dice. I was able to find the KLIC-8000 for 22. bucks on Amazon, new. There are some generic batteries on there for 1.65, but the reviews say they do not fit well in the camera, it's a challange to get them in and out.
