how can i connect any external flash to the z980?

On the Z980 if you use an external flash [other than Kodak P20]with a digital hotshoe it does not flash when you use-no flash setting. When you use flash setting -both the camera flash and the external flash fire. I want just the external flash to fire, what do I do?Do I have to use a dedicated hotshoe? Is it ok for the camera if camera flash and external flash fire at the same time?

The hot shoe should overrule the built in flash. It shouldn't fire. Make sure your connection is solid. Clean the hot shoe with a pencil eraser. They can get dirty and it can obscure the connection. Clean it. Reset the camera. Then put the flash on. Turn it on and it should shoot. If not, then your next step is to make sure your flash is compatible with the Z980. It may be that the camera doesn't see it for automatic function. Outside of that, you may be looking at a repair.

Thank you James DeRuvo. The camera is brand new and the hotshoe clean.I have to check the flash comapatibility.Maybe Kodak has made the camera,so that only the Kodak P20 flash can be used as external flash.
Thank you
