my display does not read correctlly when turned on - why ?

the batteries are fully charged and it turns on alright and it will still take pictures - but I don't know in what mode or can not read a thing from the display window in any dial selection. I am talking about the screen on top of thecamera not the picture viewing screen.

Mine also started to suffer form this problem after a few years of abuse (rolling around on the bottom of the car with no camera bag, etc...) to see what mode you're in switch on the picture viewing screen at the back of the camera, it will give you the same information as the LCD display at the top of the camera

Thank you very much Roelof for your answer - I did find it useful but not the answer I wanted to hear as it did not work that way on my camera. I think better batteries - maybe fresher or higher rating (power) might clear it up ?? Thanks again. George

George,

Batteries? I started to use the camera with 1800 mAh batteries and have slowly moved up the power scale as stronger batteries became available, at present using 2600 mAh rechargeable batteries and no luck with the LCD, try, but I believe it is more related to a loose contact or a fauly in the LCD

None of the answers offered were corect - I tried them all. I have given up on the camera ! - I have found out that it is truly useless now, after nearly five years of faithful service it is beyond economical repair. Thanks to all that responded with help and advice.
