I'm a little confused. How can you see the pics and the menus if the camera is not on? Do you mean that you can't get the lens open in order to take photos?

yes, and no. The lens cover opens but the camera does not turn on, as in the switch must be faulty. There is an option on the back of the camera to turn the viewing screen on and scroll thru the photos, access menu, etc. this part works. Camera itself wont allow me to take picture because it wont turn on. I thought maybe I had inadvertently locked myself out when allowing nonenglishspeaking relatives to scroll thru the photos we had taken but it seems there is no option for that.
Since I posted this, I found out that Sony(who owns Konica-Minolta) has a flat fix-it rate of $111 if you send it to them. My own camera shop will be cheaper, as they are familiar with the problem in the switch( behind the lenscover) I hope

I didnt recieve an answer, just a clarifying question and I do believe I answered the question myself, after phoning the only camera sevice center in the state. A common problem with the switch that they fixed in a day.
