DiMage S404 Drains Out Batteries.

For every four freshly charged batteries my DiMage S404 only lasted for few clicks and it shut down with low battery symbol flashing. I have tried it with 12 new Ni-MH batteries and resulted the same problem. With no AC/DC adapter on hand to test with a different power source, it is just a piece of junk. If anyone has encountered the same problem please let me know what was wrong it it. Is it a fixable ?

Thanks a bunch,
T Vo.

Minolta is out of the digital camera business now. SONY, however, has taken over repair and support for Minolta brand cameras. Recommend you contact them for an estimate. Rule of thumb is that if it costs 50% or more of the sale price to fix it, you're much better off getting a new one that will give you more bang for the buck.

Repair by SONY! No wonder. Steve C. from the forum just sent me a service manual which was for DSC-W1/W12 and it made me wonder a lot about when nothing was for DiMage S404. Now I know it was probably it.

Thanks for the info and advice.

I can't believe what a piece of crap the Minolta Dimage S404 is! I paid over $300. for it and it's been nothing but junk. Batteries constantly drained - have to use a tripod to get a photo that's not blurred. Many "Kodak" moments lost forever. Plain jane instamatic cameras beat this expensive joke by millions! Don't buy one . . .

I've recently acquired a Minolta DiMage S414. After about 4 or 5 pictures the NiMh batteries are drained and the camera turns off. This is very annoying and I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the camera or if this is normal for this camera. Your reply to this problem is welcomed.

The best solution to the battery problem is to get a rechargeable 6-volt belt pack. I did this almost immediately after purchasing my S414, and it works great. I wish I could say the same for the camera. It is constantly giving me trouble. My advice to all who are experiencing shut-down problems.....it seems to be a flash problem. Set the flash to "off", and try a few pics. I think you'll find it will work best without the flash.

I've had one of these since they first came out (2003, I think). I bought it for two reasons. 1) I always had luck with Minoilta SLR 35mm cameras. 2) I have large hands and this camera is easy for me to hold and operate. I wish that I had never bought it.

Saying it's a battery hog is an understatement. A fresh set of alkalines will get you maybe 25 pics. Freshly charged Ni-MH batteries will yield 10 or less. These cameras should have been recalled for this problem alone. Anyone with this problem, you are not alone. I'm looking to score an AC adapter just so I can keep using it for my ebay stuff.

The only other problem that I had is with the compact flash card cover. It's a total piece of crap! The latch broke within 6 months and has been held closed with a piece of gaffers tape since.
