Great camera, would buy again, but a few bad things
( - 5/25/05)First off, features for price this camera is Excellent!!! Shutter lag is on par with film SLR's (i.e. you don't have to "plan" when to press the shutter to get the shot) Some digital cameras have nearly a second of delay from the time you press the shutter to when it actually takes the pic.. unacceptable when you are trying to get action shots, but with the dimage Z1 I don't have to think about it, I press the shutter when I want the pic taken and it takes it. Also I like how the screen doesn't go blank or freeze for long when the focus "locks on" like the other cameras i considered. I love the long optical zoom but rarely use the digital. original lens cap is crap, but I never planned to use it, I use a 45-52MM adapter that allows me to use 52mm screw on filters and a real lens cap (and still allows full use of the zoom), I just keep a sky filter on at all times, which protects my lens and makes the camera look MUCH better, not to mention gives a great place to hold it when taking pics and blocks out most of the focus noise during videos. Print quality is awesome, I'm printing with a cannon i960 and you cant tell my digital 4x6 prints from a film print..
Now the bad... The only bad things I have to say are about the auto focus, it has a LOT of trouble in low light, due to not having a low light focusing lamp, I went from a 1.3MP Kodak with a focus assist lamp to this one without and really missed it, I end up just using a flashlight to shine on the subject in low light to get it to focus then take the pic with a flash... Also certain rare outdoor conditions make the auto focus not work...
