This might be getting kind of involved, but what about a very small piece of double-sided tape inside the battery door, so that it would stick to the inside of the compartment and the door from the inside and hold it closed? You'd have to put it off on the edge to avoid messing up the battery connections, but that may work.
Some people have replaced their battery covers, which is a matter of getting the part and then removing a few screws. That might also be worth looking into if the tape is driving you nuts!
