After taking photos, camera said, the memory card has not been formatted. Is there anyway to view the picture we took, or are they gone?

We went on a special vacation with our kids. After taking several photos, my husband changed the batteries. When we went to view our pictures, it says "Memory card has not been formatted, Format now". We have not formatted the card, in hope somehow we can retrieve our photos.

The pictures should be just fine, if they stored when you took the picture originally. My recommendation is to get a memory card reader, usually $10, it just needs to be able to read SD cards. Then you should be able to get all of the files off of the memory card and onto your computer. Hope this helps, if this doesn't work (which I'm fairly certain it will), reply back and we'll try and find another solution.

Try to reset the camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings. Another tip is to go to Nikon's website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.
Even if that works, I agree with Aditya here, get a USB memory card reader. Much easier than troubleshooting drivers for cameras. Also, if you must, you may need to recover a corrupted card. you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" to get back your pictures and recover your card.
