how do you use the timer

I assume you mean the self timer that allows you time between depressing the shutter and when the picture is taken (usually so the photographer can run into the picture!).

If so, on the back of the 3200, to the left side of the circular navigation area you can see an icon vaguely resembling a clock - a circle, dot on top, hand pointing to 10 o'clock or so. Press the nav thing in that direction, and you should be all set for your next shot (and perhaps all shots after that, you may have to press the same area after your shot to remove that mode).
