Reason for daytime photos on the coolpix 4300 to be over-exposed

Photographs taken with the flash appear normal but any landscape or portrait photo taken outdoors is severely over exposed. Any comments or suggestions. Camera has under 2500 photos taken from brand new purchase approx 3 1/2 years old.
