System Error 10, Will not turn on

Does anyone get System Error 10 when trying to turn on camera. This happened to my daughter for no apparent reason. Camera is less than 2 years old and was well cared for .

I guess we won't be buying anymore NIKONS....

Nikon support made these suggestions:
1. insert the memory card that originally came with the camera (Nikon approved card).
If that doesn't help, then:
2. remove the camera batteries. Leave the batteries out for 24 hours. then replace them

If these suggestions don't resolve your problem, they say the camera must be sent to Nikon Service because there are no "user serviceable parts on the Nikon Coolpix cameras".

Tried a new Kingston 1gb card and got "warning card cannot be read", re-installed the card thinking it may not be properly seated in to slot and got the system error message.Changed back to two different cards I have been using for about 3 yrs, took the card out completely, removed the batteries for over 24 hrs and still get only the system error 1 0 message. How much do I have to put into Nikon repairs before the repair costs more than the camera? $50 to $75 would be bette spent on a new camera from a better company ... but which one is better?????

Thanks for the information. I ended up calling Nikon and I sent them the camera (shipping was less than $4.00). They will email me an estimate and I can decide if I want to fix it. If I don't they simply mail the camera back to me. It's worth a shot. I'll let you know the outcome when I hear from them.

I just got an e-mail from Nikon that told me the same as byjamesderuvo.
The message said they could not give a turn around time or an estimate because the camera was out of warranty.
Michelle please let us know what you find out as I really do not want to just dispose of these cameras, I purchased the first one new from Staples (I just bought another one on e-bay for parts or repair hoping to at least get one working, lens is stuck)
It seems that Nikon should know what the problem is and how to fix it with so many people having this same problem.

The obvious question here is, did you format the card? Also, verify that the memory card icon is on the LCD menu after you have put it in. If so, then the camera is reading it correctly. (see page 16 of your manual)

Have you tried resetting the camera? This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Lastly, you may want to try a smaller card ... the manual mentions 256MB and 512MB cards. It may be that due to the age of the camera that the firmware doesn't accept higher capacity cards.

But like I said, if these suggestions don't resolve your problem, they say the camera must be sent to Nikon Service. And with the average cost of a camera repair is around $180, it may cost more to repair than it is really worth. The rule of thumb is that if the estimate for repair is north of 50% what you paid for it, you're better off taking that money and buying a newer and upgraded model.

James,
I only put the card into the slot and did not have any oportunity to format it, I just got the card cannot be read message. The next thing was the camera giving me the system error message. If you know this problem you will know that when you get this error message you can not get any where in the camera system. When you turn on the camera you get this message and nothing works at all. No lens extension, menu, setup, format screen or anything, then the screen shuts off.
As for the repair cost of $180 & up: The camera cost me $145 Why would Nikon think people will spend more than the camera cost to repair it or is that the whole idea?
Thanks
Endunk

Hi James & Endunk:

Endunk is reporting the same symptoms that I have. You cannot do anything with the camera. When turned on , the green light comes on and the System Error message, then that's it.
Like I said, my camera is already inroute to Nikon and I will let you know when I hear from them. When this problem occurred, my daughter had been using this card that performed perfectly fine prior. It was not a new card.

Michele

Endunk. You hit the nail on the head on buying vs. repairing. For point and shoots, it's rarely a better bargain to repair over replace. Check for a firmware update. This seems to be a common solution. Nikon may have released new firmware to address it.

Hi Guys:

Just heard from Nikon. As expected, they wanted $87.00 to repair a 2 yr. old $145 camera. I will just have them send it back and get my daughter a new one.

James and Michele,
I found an ad yesterday and contacted him about this problem and he sent this reply
"Wow 86.00 dollars for a system error 1 0. man that is brutal.
Let me give you a little information about this issue. Nikon 4600, S1 and S3 have a faulty operating system. The good news is that there is an update for it. The process of repairing that issue might take an hour or two. You (the technician) has to hard boot the camera with a jumper setting on the unit to force the new operating system in the camera and then upload all the updates.
Well I hope that information works for ya.
If the camera only needs an upload OS, I can go as low as 30.00 dollars. I can check what is wrong with your memory card but no guarantees. "

the repair shop is Dynamic Camera from East Longmeadow, MA 01028

Has anyone dealt with this shop before?

Thanks for the info... I'll give them a shot. It's better than just tossing the thing. My husband just bought a new Sony.. I hope we have good luck with this one. I have a Nikon 4300 Coolpix that we haven't had any trouble with. I guess the 4600 is just a "lemon"...

In my case, camera worked great until I took the card out to download pix (1 gig Sundisk, properly formatted, had worked well until this). Now I got the magic System Error 1 0. I ain't gonna buy another one of these, this is my second. Forget what happened to the first one, but it was also a Nikon P-O-S.
