My 256 memory card automatically divides into separate folders once the internal memory is full

While it's great that the card takes over when the internal memory is full, I would like all pictures in one folder. As it is, the camera creates new folders, each with one or two pics in it. I have deleted these folders from the card several times, but each time the overflow occurs, new folders are created. I seem to have no control over this process. since the numbering system starts at 0001 in each folder, I have to rename each, before moving them to my PC. Any ideas?

Well, you could check to see if there's a firmware update that addresses the issue. But my recommendation is to merely use multiple cards and avoid filling them up. Reason being, insurance. Any memory card can fail or become corrupted. And when you're on vacation the last thing you want is to lose the opportunity to take pictures until you can recover that media card with a software utility. If your card goes bad, swapping another one for it at that moment is of advantage so you can keep taking pics. Then, later when you're in front of your PC, you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" to get back your pictures and recover your card.

No need to lose the moment because you relied on one card when several can solve that problem.

Thanks, but the card "filling up' is not the problem. I doubt I ever did completely use the full capacity of the card. I download every night. When I said the "internal memory is full", I meant the camera itself, which only stores a dozen or so pictures at a high pixel setting. Then the overflow goes to the removable memory chip.
The problem is that I don't want the camera to create so many folders on the chip, each with one to three pictures in it and numbers in each folder starting at "1" again.
I will check for firmware updates and I have already re-formatted the card. We'll see if this clears it up.

it did not clear up - chip/camera continues to create sub-folders.

Then your only alternative that I can see is to contact Nikon about it.
