There is not much I can say. I would send it back to get serviced it is probably a climate or internal failure. There isn't anything you can do for it at home.

Same happened to me here. Someone told me that with other brand cameras there is an internal battery. Once it dies and can not hold the date and time the camera will no longer turn on. With the other brand camera he found out to plug it in or put new batteries in it and leave it for 24 hours to charge the internal battery. I just plugged it in 30 mins ago. I went back to the camera and turned it on and it came up for about 30 seconds, then, sadly, it shut off.

I will leave it plugged in until tomorrow and then post my results. Wish me luck.

btw - I have the 3100 but it's pretty much the same thing.

This happened to my 4600 recently. I have treated it nicely! No extreme conditions, etc. This is obviously a Nikon fault. My camera is less than 2 years old! Very frustrating.

Talk about bad luck with Nikon digital cameras! Dropped the first one (a Coolpix 5600) just before hitting the Grand Canyon. Had to settle for a disposal camera which was terrible! Ran out and bought a Coolpix 4600 while out there on vacation and now it won't turn on--same story as those above. Would not get a Nikon again--baaadd luck!

same happened to me...does nikon repair them for free since this is a problem with the model, not caused by the user? Or does anyone know how much it costs to fix this problem? Is it better just to get a new camera?

it looks like the charging may have worked after all. I gave up on trying to fix the camera and left it plugged in (because I forgot about it) for about 3 days. I purchased a new camera. A few days later I, for fun, popped some batteries into my 3100 and... NOW IT WORKS!!! I don't know if the "charging the internal clock battery" actually was the cure for the problem but it seems to be what solved my problem. I recommend trying it.

You can just send it back to the compnay if it has not yet been six months and most of the time they will send you a new one, you just pay for the shipping!

I have same problem. Camera shut off and wont turn on. I bought new charger and batteries. Turned on for about 2 seconds and shut off. But I could hear some kind of ticking noise . I thought I was nuts but I took batteries out and ticking stopped. Back in and it started again. Dont know if this means anything. Any body else have this happen?
