Hi Sandra,
I'm assuming you're looking for a basic point and shoot and not one of the thousand-dollar DSLRs with interchangeable lenses and all that. A good one for you to check out is the Nikon Coolpix 5400. It has a nice 4x zoom and a macro mode for close-ups, and it also has the ability for an external flash. As you might have discovered if you've already tried taking close-up photos, a built-in flash can be bright and nasty. Even the external ones don't always work well so whatever camera you use consider shooting in good light where flash is not needed. But yeah, the Nikon= really nice close-ups of small objects.

I also meant to add- the 5 megapixels should be plenty for printing 8x10s and definitely for posting online!

Brenda....thank you so much. Great input! Since I asked the question, although I was originally leaning towards a Nikon with interchangeable lenses, I ended up with a Canon PowerShotA640 with 10 mp. So far I have been able to get some really excellent shots...but, because good ambient light is now gone in the Northwest, have ordered a lightbox so that I can totally eliminate the flash. With all the associated equipment, it was still just under $1000!!!
Again, thank you!!!
