I'm actually experiencing a similar problem. For awhile, I could turn off/then on the camera and the viewfinder would be normal again, but now it just looks whitewashed/ghosty. Good description. I haven't actually tried to take photos to see if they'd turn out OK but you're right that in playback, old photos do look fine through the viewfinder. I'll let you know if I learn anything about it; please do the same!

In looking around the internet, I can across this "forum" where people are talking about a "defective CCD" that Nikon is aware of and will replace free of charge. If you look, it seems that their problems are similar to ours (though they talk about horizontal lines, while we're just experiencing the white/ghost thing..) Perhaps this is the problem????

I am going to pack up my camera and send it in and see what happens. I don't know where you should send it in South America. Where did you buy it?

I bought it in the states at best buy online, but now i am in panama central america two and a half hours from the city up in the mountains. i will have to look and see if there is a nikon dealer here. if not then the only other thing i can do is ship it back to the states to a family member and have them ship it whereever it needs to go.. its sad because we just ahd a baby girl and i had to run out and buy another camera, a cheap one of course but at least i have soemthing.

To be absolutely frank, the Nikon Coolpix 5700 is nothing but trouble. I have used this camera for about three years. I am an experienced film professional, so I was able to learn how to use it pretty quickly. Once I switched from film to digital and started trying to use this camera for weddings and other events the problems began.

I had read on other forums that the camera had issues. Especially with slow response time and poor quality gears in the zoom that would create failures over time. Buddy, that aint the half of it. The first thing that happened was the all to popular "speedlight error". Anyone who has this camera knows what I am talking about. The camera will become unusable unless you set it to the NO FLASH mode. No combination of controls or off the camera flash will work anymore. You can still take some nice, high quality pics in the daytime outside but the rest of the functions won't work anymore.

Don't even think about attaching an off the camera flash, that won't work either.

Next, you call Nikon's customer service. I spoke to a very rude and poorly informed rep who told me that I had to ship the camera to New York (I live in Virginia) and more than likely the repair would cost me in the neighborhood of $250. They weren't going to help with shipping either way also. Next I found out from other 5700 owners that even with this repair there was no guarantee that the situation wouldn't happen again within a few months time.

Still I persevered, because when it worked the camera took insanely detailed images with the proper settings.

The Last Straw:

I was in Disney World. Animal Kingdom to be exact. Tried to take a picture of the "Tree of Life". Black bands appeared across the image. Walked a bit further to Africa and was trying to take shots of the buildings and architectural details. Here is what happened. Have you ever used the paint daubs filter in PhotoShop? Set it to about ten and that is what every picture looks like. Every shot was a gooey mess of color that looked like a melting oil painting. I still had two days on this vacation so needless to say I was a little annoyed.

Thank god for my wife's Kodak. My new Kodak is being delivered tomorrow. A P880 with a good track record and good reviews from just about everyone who has used it. Nikon used to be a good camera. I will tell you frankly "never again". Go with Kodak, or Canon. They at least seem to pay attention to what the customer wants.

I apologize for the length, but I have a $700 paperweight that annoys me every time I look at it.

Good luck and Happy picture snapping to everyone out there.

I have black horizontal lines also in my Nikon Coolpix 5700. I thought it's the CCD problem, so I sent it to the Nikon Service Center. I received it back today, but it still has the SAME black horizontal lines in every picture I take, though the invoice says the CCD is replaced. Now I have to sent it back to Nikon again...

Good Lord!! What is up with Nikon?? I mailed mine today, of course I am in panama central america, and the guy at dhl told me that if I sent it to the states that whoever gets it has to pay duty on the camera, I just knew Nikon woudln't so I had to mail it to my dad, then he has to turn around and mail it to Nikon,, 140.00 on my end to mail it to dad, maybe 100.00 for him to mail it to Nikon.. So now I am out 240.00 then they will have to mail it back to my dad, and he will bring in down when he comes here in dec.. Now if I get this camera back after all that and its still not fixed, then Nikon and I are going to have a problem!!! I can understand some thing is wrong with the design and yes they are willing to fix the problem, but for you to do all that and it still not fixed? and then they returned it to you that way? O NO.. If I were you I would write someone in charge and find out why some guy sent a still broken camera back to you.. for one thing nikon has gotten the last dime out of me they will ever see, just like wolverine said, there are better cameras out there..

Wow, this is incredible! I came to this site thinking that a particular problem with my Nikon 5700 was a fluke of some sort and it instead it seems, it is in fact the norm. When I purchased my camera (Aug 2003), I paid about $1100 which included a 3 year extended warranty and state tax.

I used the camera often in my work with a national publication. The camera has always been complicated with an incredibly slow shutter speed and lighting issues. Right after my warranty expired in Sep 2006, I started experiencing poor color quality.

This soon deteriorated to the "ghosting" effect that others have described. Previously shot photos appeared in excellent quality. Now when I take a photo, "Every shot was a gooey mess of color that looked like a melting oil painting." (as stated by a previous responder).

It is hard for me to fanthom that every few years, I will be dropping such a large amount of cash into a electronic device with a limited shelf life. After all that I have read, this camera probably only has a shelf life of 2-3 years at best. I long for the old 35mm cameras from the past

Thank You, I just discovered the "service advisory" for this model camera that NIKON has listed in small print pn the website. You literally have to "mine and troll" through the various COOLPIX570 menus before you discover it. At any rate, my camera is being shipped to the west coast for repair today. It just seems tio me that for the amount of money paid for this product, NIKON should have been seeking each and every one of us out individually regarding this issue.

My 5700 went crazy after 2 years and I paid $250 to have Nikon fix it. Now only 12 months later the images are full of horizontal lines and other electronic functions are going whacky (like it wont turn off unless you take the battery out and put it back in) -- same stuff I paid to have fixed a year ago. I guess I'll send it back again. I paid $1100 for this thing in 2003! I'm pretty unhappy about this.

I have had my 5700 for about 3 years. I started having problems about 2 months before my extended warranty expired. I have sent it in three times now for repair of the horizonal green lines, and the melting effect. This is ridiculous as the amount of money we spent on this camera (about $1,000 new). I bought mine at "Good Guys" in California, but they went out of business, so I thought I was out of luck, but GE honors the extended warranty....so far, but like I said I have sent it in now for the third time. Can we get a petition going with the better business bureau or something. It seems that there are so many customers with this same problem. So it should be replaced as a manufactures problem.
I thought Nikon would want to keep a good name, not screw their customers.
