I believe this has to do with the camera thinking you need the flash. Yes, even in the brightest sunshine it does this. It's apparently a glitch.
You can get around it by turning the flash off manually or putting the camera into a preset mode that has the flash disabled. You can also, of course, send it back... because it's annoying when it happens... but from what I am reading it doesn't sound like you will get much help from Nikon on this particular issue.
