The lens cover (shutter) on my Coolpix 7600 no longer opens when the camera is turned on and the zoom comes out. Any idea how to fix this?

Nikon wants $181 to repair it, which is a bit much for a $200 camera. It sure seems like there could be a easy solution.

You could try blowing it out with canned air, maybe it's just a grain of dust/dirt that's causing it.

But to repair it, the rule of thumb is that if the cost of repair is north of 50% the original price you paid, you're better off just buying a new one. And since the camera is over two years old, you're much better off just using any money you'd lay out repairing it to invest in a newer and better model.

Then, perhaps just breaking it lose if you don't damage the lens in the process and you have a backup camera.

Dear Nikon users of coolpix 7600, I have the same problem but opposite, the lens cover doesn't close. The camera has been used less then 2 years (20 month) perfect pictures etc. but the NIKON service support warrant is a joke. As you told earlier same amount as a new Nikon for fixing the lens cover.

This is a manufacturing and design failure and it's Nikon image to fix known problems, or you have a BAD IMAGE soon..... I say ASAP, BAD WILL support in Europe. In Norway it's 5 years warranty and in Sweden it's round the corner warranty.

I have the same problem as Cony - my lens won't close after I have turned the camera off. I can close it by tapping it lightly with my finger and kindda "rubbing" it closed. But I paid over $300 for this camera, I should not have to be doing that!
It happened a few months after getting the camera. My 2-yr Warrenty runs out in June, so I am looking for a replacement camera and I plan on sending it back to the company for repairs. I plan on contacting them about it. I think if more people have this problem, the should contact the company and complain BIG TIME!!
I have taken it into a Nikon dealership to be blown out, but the problem continues.

The time between shots is ridiculously SLOW...sometimes having to wait for half a minute to take another shot. Not good with kids!!
I am hoping that it can be repaired and then I plan on reselling it. It does take good outdoor and well lighted shots. Video is GREAT - and I love how it has good sound even on the camera for play back....my sister's Panasonic has very poor speakers poor video sound.

Well, if your camera is still under warranty, then I'd say it's probably worth it to fix. If not, then I doubt that it would be worth paying to fix it, quite honestly. What I would recommend is saving it for a backup camera and just buying a new one.

Another option is if the camera's warranty is expired, you may have extended warranty time as a perk of the credit card you used.
