Prices for memory cards are dropping like a stone. Particularly now that the current size of media is in the 4GB range for high capacity secure digital media. However, bigger is not necessarily better.

It's usually a better idea to have several smaller cards (like in the 25MB or 512MB range) than one large card. That way, should the card fail at a crucial moment, it only takes a second to switch out one card for another and then try and recover that card later with a PC utility.

Having said that, the rule of thumb has always been that one gets what they pay for. It's the old addage that a $10 helmet is good for a $10 head. now, that doesn't mean photographers should only pay top dollar for their media. But sticking with major manufacturers like SanDisk, Lexar, or even Fuji will give you a secure feeling with the quality of your media.

One also wants to pay attention to write speed. Especially when shooting quick shots in succession. The faster the write speed, the better.
