Nikon L1 recommend 2000mAh rechargeable batteries, can I use 1600mAh instead? How about using batteries more than 2000mAh? what will be the side effects??

The mAh rating of a battery describes how much power they can store. So you can use any mAh rated batteries you want, just know that the higher the number, the longer they will last. If you use a lower mAh rating than Nikon reccomend, they might not last very long before needing to be recharged.
