do I have to use a nikon brand nimh battery with the L4, or can I use any brand?

The manual says to use EN-MH1 Batteries. What is the difference between these and standard Nimh batteries with 2000 maH? Will these other brand batteries damage the camera?

Well, these days, I would beware of knockoff batteries. They can overheat and even explode. Frankly, not worth the risk to save a few bucks.
