I've seen this happen to a couple of cameras, and I'm fairly certain its a lens error, where either the lens can't focus or it can't extend. Some Nikon cameras can't handle higher humidity areas, so that could be your problem, along with the lens being out of alignment. First, try turning the camera on and off several times, then if nothing happens, turn the camera off, and look at the lens; check to see that everything looks symmetrical. If it doesn't you can try popping it back in place yourself, or take it to a camera repair shop. If none of these solutions work, I think you may have to take it to a camera repair shop anyway.
