Ray,

Make sure your battery is fully charged. If that is not the case, take the battery out of the camera for about 4 or 5 minutes, then reinsert it. Try to turn the camera on again. If this does not work for you, contact Nikon for technical support or warranty service.

That has happened to my Coolpix Four times already. When I take it back to BestBuy to take advantage of my replacement plan, they say that it is something that has been happening to these cameras. The lens probably won't go back in, in which case, you should probably get the camera fixed or replaced, because it won't take pictures. Unless you want a dead camera. Then you can keep it. =]

Had the same error. Went to several sites and "hitting it" and pulling on lens came up several times. I bravely did so as it was "dead" anyway and.... you guessed it... it is now a fully functioning camera!

I think ALL Coolpix camera's are faulty with the lense because i have a Coolpix L16, i had it for about a month and the lense just stopped coming out and i'd never done any damage to it. Called a camera repair shop and they said that there is no point in getting it repaired because it'll cost more to repair it than by a new camera, and also they told me that they've gotten heaps of calls about the Coolpix camera's. I dont recommend it to anybody. It is a faulty camera and someone needs to advise Nikon of what they are letting people buy from them.
