P5100 is great camera (Neal Pollack - 10/19/07)

Compared the P5100 and the Canon SD-850-is. The are both fine cameras. I purchased the Nikon P5100 due to the following pros;
- It showed better low light exposure and noise handling than the SD-850.
- It has a ruberized grip so I will not drop it. The canon was very slippery and harder to hold firmly.
- The flash hotshoe is great, and immediately worked with other flash unit, no need to read instructions.
- The ergonomics of the button layout and command wheel/dial are great, and very similar to my large Nikon SLR. It's almost like a mini-Me for the large camera, in that it took very little reading to understand the usage.
- Full manual mode. All the modes, Auto, P, S, A, M, are there, just like the full size SLR.
- The menus were fairly easy to figure out. Maybe some day
I will read the instruction book. Maybe :-)
- The fact that they cram 12 megapixels into the small sensor and still get this good a picture and noise handling is remarkable. You want to do better than the P5100? Then buy a full size DSLR.

Cons:
- I found the inconsistent display of the yellow face-recognition box confusing. The camera always
focused accurately anyway, so what is the purpose of the yellow face recognition box, and why it is inconsistent?
Canon SD-850 showed the face recognition box more consistently, but so what?? The Nikon P-5100 took a better
picture, face box or no face box.
- Slightly too big for shirt pocket, if that matters to you.
- Neck strap is stupid for this size class, I did not install it.
