P6000 is NOT for me (craig in CT - 12/10/08)

While many newcomers to digital photography may be awed by the Nikon P6000, I am not impressed by its overall performance. This was supposed to be my third digital camera, but I am going to be sending it back for a refund. I am a 6' 1", 230 lb man with large hands, so the P6000 does not fit my hands well. It is awkward to pick up and to hold. The previewed color image in the LCD does not accurately represent the forthcoming photograph. It is very difficult to do simple white balance adjustments that are accurate. When I pushed the exposure it very quickly added white speckles to the photos in low light situations. A fully charged battery lasted less than a 150 pictures. yes, I had to recharge. The controls were not intuitively arranged to my way of handling a camera. The 4x zoom does not offer sufficient distance penetration/range that I need. I will say that the picture details were good in outdoor and bright light situations, though in full snow mode zoom the camera generated a dark border around the mourning doves I was photographing on the snow. Preset scene settings initially seemed to offer some setting facilitation when shooting indoors, but trying to zoom in on a stage in a dark auditorium did not yield good quality pix, with the stock lens. Presets constrained manual adjustments. Trying to set the M, A, P, and S parameters was a coin toss because of the difficulty of trying to remember which buttons and wheels to push and turn to get the desired combination of aperture and speed to be able to shoot without the flash. Someone with small hands and a lot better memory and more patience might find this camera satisfactory, but compared to my two other Sony cameras, this was a pain. I got only half a dozen good pix out of the 150 that I shot in a wide range of settings, which is NOT my usual success ratio for pix I take. A word to the wise: go to a camera store and do a hands-on trial before making a purchase!!
