My camera keeps saying lens error on the screen. I have never dropped or abused it, is it something to be worried about?

The camera is brand new its barely been used and its been well taken care of, I just want to know what I can do otherwise I am taking it back.

If the camera is brand new, I would say the first thing to do is to send it back to the company and let them solve the problem.

Many of the ' cures ' that you find on the internet is not recommended by the manufacturer. Some claim it works for them, some could not get any result and some make the camera worse than before. In the end, it depends very much on your luck and it is not advisable to try your luck when you have a manufacturer's warranty.

Send it back should be the safest way to go.

Lily,
I can only tell you what other people do when they encounter lens error problem and hope this reaches you in your email just like your message turns up in mine.

Of particular interest is this feedback at dpReview where a Nikon camera was given up for good for two years until the owner decided to have a go at it, DIY style, and made it work again.

This forum has something to read about if you are interested

This is another one that discuss the same problem but on a different camera.

The general impression is lens error is common among the digital compacts, not limited to one or two models or any particular make.
Usually it is the result of dropping, knocking, besides others causing the gear system of the lens to get jam or go out of alignment. Sometimes one can be lucky and get it back on track by carefully knocking the base of the camera on a padded surface while turning on the camera. But be careful not to overdo it.
The repair cost is usually expensive, as you can see in the forum, hence instead of throwing the camera away many people resort to pulling, pushing or even twisting the lens, while others knock it, bang it and a few pull out the seal around the lens to let the lens move more freely.

That is what people do, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and a few damaged their cameras by overdoing it.

WOWWWW!!! I thought I broke my new Nikon camera when I dropped it...said lens error and spring that holds the battery in came out....If I'm a bit careful, I can stick the battery in without that lil orange holder....but I was very upset about the lens!!! I'm also in Mexico and I bought the camera in Asia....so I worried for a week until I saw the posts above! Knocked it on my bathroom rug while turning it on and off a few times got it working perfectly!!!! Going to be more careful now=0D

It worked!!! Thanks!!!
I had dropped my S10 about 3 ft onto concrete and got the 'Lens Error'. Sent it off to repair and 6 WEEKS later it finally came back repaired. It would have cost around $150, but the camera shop waived the fee because it took so long. Fast forward 11 months. I was just taking some pictures at my daughter's birthday and went to turn on after briefly having it off and got the 'Lens Error' again. I tried powering down several times (by removing battery) to no avail. Tried gently tapping with it off. Still no luck. At this point I figured i was just screwed. Anyway, read Azuris's post and tried the 'gently tap while powering up'. Worked first try. Thanks!

try the following as suggested by nikon

1) Perform Reset From Setup menu n make sure that battery is fully charged before you perform reset.
2) if point 1 doesn't solve this problem....... take out battery , memory card out of camera and let you camera without these accesories for 2-3 days..then try...

its all depend on your luck.... for me these two didn't work...at last i've send my camera to nikon service center for servicing as camera was still under warranty....

I have the problem too. My S10 camera is 6 months old, never dropped or knocked it. Sent it into Sony service center with warranty and their website posting said it will cost me $99 to fix it, that it was not covered by the warranty, with no explanation whatsoever how they arrive at the non-warranty decision. Any advice?

I think problem is in lens movement. If you power off your camera on zoom in condition, then this problem arises at next power on. So try to keep your camera at 0 zoom position. Nilesh, your trick doesnt work in my camera.

The camera to my knowledge had not been dropped, and had been in a drawer for three weeks when the Lens Error first appeared and it locked up. Eventually removed battery , card and left for two or three days, it came right and it worked fine for about three weeks, then same error again, only way to turn it off is take out battery. Sometimes it starts up OK sometimes it just locks up with Lens Error. Took it to Nikon and off course it worked every time in the shop. I will try the above suggestion to turn off with lens zoomed all the way in. Next time I'll buy an Olympus.

I have an S10 with the lens error problem, given to me. Previous owner has reason to believe the plastic gear is stripped, that moves or "unparks" the lens upon startup. I tried Nilesh's advice (above): started in preview ("Play") mode, then used the same preview button to switch to camera mode. It works! It takes a little longer to start up this way, so I'll try taking it apart to see if there are replaceable parts in there, next; but this is a happy workaround. Thank you, Nilesh Patel.

I have the same problem. My s10 dropped while in my bag, (not a camera bag), and the lens error message came on after a rubbing sound came from the lens. I tried the gently tapping on the bathroom rug after removing five screws from the camera and only a small patch of a dark circle from the lens is showing on the display. The good thing is that I can still take pictures but a little speck of dark circle is still there. However, the rubbing or clicking sound is still present when it is turned on. I am no longer using the on/off button to turn it on, I am using the shooting/playback button !! Thanks for the few suggestions that helped me. I hope that I can help someone with the same problem.

Now this is ridiculous. I have the EXACT same problem with my camera, and I'm not at all amused to find so many complaints of the same thing on just one single forum !!! Doesnt this point towards a design defect? Shouldnt we all be given our money back???

But guess that would be a long shot. :P

I discovered what Nilesh suggested, on my own, and was using it till today, when all the images started having a dark bottom right corner. And yes, my Nikon S10 too makes a clicking sound when powering up, like some of you have experienced. Something like a sprocket with broken teeth.

I have consulted some camera repair shops in Chandni Chowk, New Delhi, India, and they're asking for 1500 INR for it. Is the price fine? Had also checked with Nikon Service Center in Bangalore, who had quoted 7000 INR just for the replacement lens unit. Service charges + taxes extra. Had bought my cam at around 6500 INR, so it made no sense spending that kind of money for repairs.

Nilesh, I too appreciate your work around in your earlier post. The picture/camera button to power ON works great. But... I couldn't leave well enough alone. I wanted to see if I could get the lens back on "track" or whatever it that was causing the problem so I would have to continue using the alternative ON method. I tried tapping the camera with the LCD screen right side edge facing down on the the padded armrest of my chair. I did the alternative power ON method and found that I now had a crescent of black on the low right side of my screen. I turned off the camera and used the normal power on button while pound the top left edge of the lens portion on the ball of my other hand. I was hoping to get the lens or whatever to shift back. Since I'd just the normal power ON method, I still got the Lens error message. I had to release battery to turn it off. This time, I then turned my camera ON using the alternative method and the black ring is virtually gone. I can still just barely still see it. I am NOW going to leave well enough alone. I am happy to have my camera back. Thanks Mr. Patel for your earlier suggestion.

I found a person on eBay that says they fix the Nikon S10. Just do a search on ebay using: FIX NIKON S10
S/he says they will do it for $69.99 or by quote. Their eBay name is rongyuanxie and they have 3977 feedbacks with a 99.7% positive rating.
It looks like s/he is honest enough but I have tried twice emailing them to see if they will in fact repair my camera with the "Lens Error"
problem, but have not heard back. Let me know if any of you have better luck.

hi guys great topic I dropped my girlfriend s10 yesterday and got the terrific notice on the screen saying lens error ( cam doped from 40cm ) we had that before when Bia thrown the cam like bad on concrete but that time nikon fixed it as a part of warranty, but since we are out of it now and she was so sad i decided to fix it my self, I found this forum, first of all Thank You Mr. Nilesh great job finding the alternative way works in our case too, but i was unhappy about the visible black corners, 30 screws later I got to the heart of problem, it is not the lens that brakes, it is the ccd matrix bed that fails i think it is a part of image stabilization its suspended on springs and you can move it with a tooth pick to make the black spots disappear I found the best position and immobilized the whole sensor chaise using wedges made out of toothpicks, camera takes perfect pictures back again you have to turn it on Nilesh way it still does the buzing noize but appart from that works fine good luck fixing yours

This can work with CoolPix S10
1) Remove battery.
2) Replace Battery (Insure it is fully charged)
3) Press the Shooting/Preview button and keep pressing it while you press the power on button. This tells the camera to go into PREVIEW MODE without checking the lens. See if you can preview a few photos and that it works in preview - If it does NOT I cannot help you here.
4) If the Camera Works in Preview mode then press the Shooting/Preview button to put it back into "Take Photo Mode".
5) There can be a delay but it starts up without the lens error.
6) Make sure the ZOOM IN and OUT works and in most cases if the lens operates then you can take a photo. If the Zoom in and Out does not work you have a jammed lens.
7) If the LENS is Jammed AND it is OUT of warranty you 'might' want to tap the lens barrel against your palm. I have found when you remove the battery you can gently tap the lens into telephoto mode by tapping the back of lens assembly into your palm.
