How do can we improve the lighting problem and skin tone problem with indoor shots?

I've owned this camera for 18 months. The outdoor shots are clear and colorful but when I take indoor shots at a party, the background is so dark and the skin tone of the people are not very good. Is there anything we can set in the camera to eliminate this problem and improve indoor shots? The party scene setting does not work well for indoor shots and creates very blurry pictures.

Thanks for your help.

When this camera is in Auto mode, you can control a few different aspects that might help. Try playing with the exposure compensation (you can set this to deal with high or low contrast; might help eliminate dark backgrounds).
Strangely, sometimes the modes on digital cameras (like Party scene) do not work very well for what they're advertised to do. You sometimes get better results mixing it up. I have found that Dusk/ Dawn settings sometimes give me good results in dark indoor photos.
