How to open a Nikon S4

I have the blank screen to.
Can anyone tell me how to open the camera up so I can get to the shutters?.. I have all the screws out I can find and still don't see how to open the oiptical part without removing it from the camera body and see no way to do that..

Would be happy to buy a service manual copy if there is one out there.

Thanks Gary

Your taking your cameras life into your own hands trying that, Gary. Did you attempt to reset the camera first before attempting such a complicated task?

Yes I did James.. also tried the tap to the side, changed batteries, even tried a rain dance.. ha!.. ..

The camera had been sitting for about 6 months. I suspect any oil on the shutters dried out.. making them stick.. could be they came off their hinges too..

I have fixed cameras, clocks, watches and electronics as a hobby.. .. I think I have a chance.. If nothing else I'll learn from it..

It's not much use or value as it is .. I see used, working S4s going for ~$120 on ebay.. got a quote of $150 to repair it.. ouch..

Thanks
Gary

Sounds like a good exercise then. And hopefully, you'll stick around to give all of us the benefit of your experience. We get similar questions on the boards every once in awhile and having a clear voice of experience would be most helpful.

Good luck.

Heres how to open a Nikon S4 ( Rubics Cube ) You will need a Philips #0000 screwdriver , a Recce #0000 screwdriver would be better becouse it is a true cross with square corners in the center like the screws used on this Nikon S4 . This is a hard size to find this small , some on Ebay ,Ace Hardwear and Sears . I got one at Sears a philips #0000 , But it would not fit in the screws , the blades are a little to thick to go in the slots , I had to thin them a little bit and squar the corners ,and file the center point back some so it will go down in the screw far enough to get a good bight , you will need a small file and magnafing glass to see to do the thinning job .
Start with the main body and remove the 4 screws on the bottom ( 2 under the battery door ) , then 2 on the end , there is no screws on the top ( DO NOT PRY OF THE SLIDE SWITCH BUTTON , IT WILL BREAK OFF ) the top will unsnap from the sides with gentle prying when opening up, next turn the lens and remove the 2 screws holding the metal cover ( these were very VERY Tight on my S4 ,diffrent kind of screw from the others , they have a taperd head and bight fast hard , had to use a Philips #00 and tap the screwdriver some to get these bad screws out ( got to get these out , other screws hidden under the cover ) with cover now off remove 4 screws ( I found the center screw on the next cover was a tapered head type , it was tight but not over tight like the other two bad ones ) with this cover off remove the center screw on the strap loop/ring other two can stay if you wish , now back to lens end remove 3 screws on the side the cover came off of , turn the lens head to get these , now open the battery door and start to pry open inside battery area ( no marks will show in here ) it will need little pry here and there , now that the back cover is off , the lens cover can be removed by removing 5 screws on the screen side half ( non metal half ) turn the lens to get the 3 on swivel side of the lens , now turn this lens cover half to the back side of main body where the cover is removed , now the lens cover half can be pryed open ( may stick some at lens end , my S4 did ) the other lens half cover ( metal half ) has a metal cover on it , and from what I have read the metal is glued on , some one said theres fell off , it seams to move some ,I think it may be held with foam tape , I think there are more hidden screws under this metal cover holding other cover half to the lens frame , there is more than the other 3 screws on the swivel side ( I did not remove this half yet , may not have too to fix , not sure yet, my S4 has a focus problem , not sure why yet.
Good luck with your S4 . Hope this will help you.
