On some early production units of the D200. There was an issue with "banding". When there was an area of extremely contrasting parts of an image (e.g. a light bulb on a black background), bands were apparent at the edges of the contrasting area. How long have you had the camera? If it among the first produced, this may be your problem. I'm not sure if there is a firmware fix for this but I seem to remember having heard of one.
