I have a D200 since last October and am having problems with dust. I have had it cleaned 3 times already.

I am using the 18-200 lens - I know that it is the lens that lets in the dust. I was just on holiday and noticed a lot of dust but could not find a place to have it cleaned. I have looked into cleaning the sensor myself but am unsure if this is a good idea or not. I tried cleaning it according to the instructions in the manual but it was not effective. Any suggestions?

Dear MJ,

The lens does not let in the dust. Dust comes into the camera body when the lens is off. Dust falls onto the sensor and is especially attracted to it if it is warm and magnetized from having being used. You can clean it yourself; there are aftermarket products available online. The surest way is to take it to an Nikon-authorized camera repair center who may send it off to Nikon for a thorough cleaning. Make sure you keep a lens or body cap on your camera when not in use so as to minimize the opportunity for dust to enter the camera body.

There is a useful site on sensor cleaning at this location which you may wish to take a look.

There are a lot more articles to read if you key in the search field for 'sensor cleaning'. However, you may not want to miss this one which ,with illustrations, give users a good idea of how to go about it.
