I don't know what this particular error is, but if the camera's freezing up and it seems to be a 'mechanical' rather than physical problem (i.e. no grinding noises, etc.), then you should try doing a reset. Should be somewhere in your Setup menu; you may also try popping out the batteries, waiting a few minutes, then putting them back in. Something may just be glitching.

It seems to be some sort of an electronic failure. Try removing the batteries for a couple of days so all of the electronics reset. If it is still "frozen"after a subsequent start-up, bring it to an authorized service center. This camera is really a computer with a lens and as such, it should only be repaired by a qualified Nikon certified service center in order to protect your warranty.

Good luck.

Are you sure it's not fEE? fEE is a common Nikon error message. One of the more common things that causes this is that Nikon requires that a lens that has a aperture ring be set to the smallest (highest number) aperture. A lot of Nikkor lenses actually have a locking switch on them to ensure that they stay "locked in position." Don't worry about the aperture this way... it's required that the aperture is set on the camera with this model.

The good news is, (if this is the problem) nothing is broken. Just set the lens properly, and happy shooting!

I was wondering why so many people have the same fEE problem with all kinds of AI lenses on D200 and other Nikon digital bodies. The problem must be mechanical, not electronic.
Following avidday's advice, I checked the lens mounting ring on the camera. That little slider on the ring at two o'clock sets the aperture for the camera (by sliding it, you can see how the aperture changes on the LCD display).
Every time you're using a lens with aperture ring, the aperture ring must be locked at the smallest setting. When you mount the lens by rotating it into position, the little slider on the camera rotates too. The problem comes when the slider is not fully rotated. Why? Because the smallest aperture of a 50mm f:14 lens (for ex.) is f/22 and the smallest aperture on the D200 is f/32. Thus, you have to push the slider to the f/32 end to fix fEE.
To fix fEE I took some scotch pad, cut out a tiny piece and glued it on the lens ring, below the aperture markings, to make the rim a bit longer ie. to push the slider on the camera into the f/32 zone

Hi all - so Cliff - I've also got a D200, and an Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens (box says Nikkor F AF), am getting this fEE flashing error on every aperture apart from f/16, which is a pain as this only allows me to shoot at f/2.8. Can't see any other way around this - do I need to replace the lends for a different mount type?
Cheers in advance.
