this is a very heavy and expensive camera that is not suitable for backpacking
what you need is a light and and rugged camera that is designed for travel
the new panasonic lumix tz5 is a very good choice.

Consider the Olympus SW line, too. They're not going to be like a DSLR with multiple lenses etc, but they are rugged and small. I have the 850SW and it's been quite good so far, with very good macro modes. If it gets dirty, rinse it off and keep going (clean thoroughly when you get home).

Yeah, I think a DSLR would be more a drag on you. And if you take a spill, that's alot of impact damage. Take it once, though and you'll know. But before you do, invest in a 1A Skylight filter for every lens. Reason being? Insurance. They will take any impact damage and spare your lens. I can't tell you many times I have thrashed a 1A filter and saved my camera lens. It's well worth the $20 or so, believe me.

I went out and bought the tz5...I love it! Great pictures for such a small camera! I'll take it on a trip next week to Grand Canyon...will know more then.
