Can an external flash be mounted from the bottom of the camera?

I don't think so, unless you had a hotshoe to tripod mount adapter and even then, you'd have no shutter synch. What you could do, however, is add a rack of superbright LED lights via the tripod mount. Check out CameraBright.

I don't know why anyone would want to mount the flash on the bottom of the camera when there is a hot shoe built into the cameria on the top. Keeping that in mind I know that there are various configurations of attachments for speed lights that could probably be mounted in various configurations that would allow the flash to end up under the camera and be attached to the sync via a cable. There are also various brands of wireless transmitters that allow you to fire a flash that is not attached to the camera hot shoe.
