In 1966 I took photography @ Penn State and the first camera was an Alpa 6c with a Weston 5 hand held meter. We spent 6 weeks photographing a Gray card. I was a great way to understand gray scale (digital cameras see 256 values of gray in RGB). But I just got a D300 myself and it is a quantum leap over my days of film Nikon cameras. The lenses may have the same level of quality but how they integrate with the body is on another level. I would recommend getting vibration reduction lenses because I remember "handhelds" with a 200mm f4 that weren't as sharp as new lenses. Yes Go for it. If you like Nikon then lenses will work on future DX bodies. If you think your future leads to full frame then consider FX lens bodies. I hope you succeed with your thesis and you camera serves you well.
