hey, how can I set the Focus mode and AF-area mode on the nikon d3000, it always says 'this option is not available with current settings'

I am trying to set up my Nikon d 3000. The mode dial on the top of the camera is set to p. In the shooting menu I want to change the focus mode and AF-mode but these are the only things that are not in highlighted text. Currently all my shots are out of focus...and I think it is because these two modes have not been set. Would really appreciate if you could help

I hate to say it, ,\but more often than not, it's user error, not camera setup issues.Those modes are probably only available in manual mode. More likely, you're not prefocusing on your subject.
