In the DX mode does the camera just crop the image to the center 24 x 16 mm, or can you choose to use a 16 x 24 mm or perhaps even a 20mm square?

In the future I would like to buy a D3, and I'm interested in the answer to the above question for buying lenses for my current D300.

Hi Larry,

The DX mode on Nikon cameras only uses the center 24x16mm of the sensor. As far as I know there is no way to manually select the area of the sensor you want to use.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Ben.

Your answer helps, although, it seems like a waste of capability that would cost almost nothing for Nikon to install. A larger square image or a choice of landscape or portrait without rotating the camera would be great features.
