Why do I want to buy American Nikon D3 at $4500 + VERSUS Japanese at $2500?

I've seen the D3 'Japanese' version for $2,500 (body only). Why for so much less than 'American' version which typically sells for no less than $4,500?

Americans want to make their money on a product that's why they charge on imports. The like to scare you and tell if the camera breaks you'll have to go to Japan to fix it.Don't believe the hype.

Then perhaps you better read the fine print about service warranties, PhotoChef. Because unless a camera has a US warranty, oftentimes it will be refused for warranty repair. If you buy a product under "gray market" for instance. It isn't hype.

As for a professional, detailed answer, I'm ont really sure what you are asking. Fact is that often, when buying electronics in another country, the firmware is different, the menus aren't in the language you want, and your service warranty may not be honored in your country.

Does that help?

Thank you J DeRuvo - after your 1st reply I was forced to research further. Your reply of Sept 04 to PhotoChef syncs accurately with what I learned. Unless the camera is warranted by Nikon Corp - even service recalls will not be honored. I've owned 2 Nikons with issues that Nikon should repair for free due to Nikon warranty.

When you've got a lot of cash tied up in equipment over a long period of time - you want to feel secure with qualified repair service. Although the extra bucks are steep - I've decided it's best to pay the price - knowing Nikon stands behind their products.

Well, considering it's a DSLR I agree with your decision. Had this been a point and shoot it would've been another story. But considering the cost to replace it with a similar model, I think you're getting off light.
Good luck.
