Can the D40 display what we should see in the viewfinder BEFORE you actually shoot pictures?

I thought all digital cameras show what you can see through the lense on the back moniter, so that you don't have to squash your nose onto the screen, but my new D40 doesn't seem to do this.

I had the same ' shock' a couple of years back when I bought my D70.

Subsequently I found out that all dSLRs don't show you the picture on the LCD during that fraction of a second when the picture is taken except for a few models of Olympus, such as E-330, E410 and E510.

Olympus calls it 'Life View SLR' and you may wish to read more about it in this report

I don't believe the D40 does that. I've read most of the manual and tried all the buttons, lol, but I don't believe you can actually see your photo before it is taken.

Hey, i too got a big shock that the monitor does not show it 'live' like other compact digital cameras. Kind of disappointing that expensive SLR cameras do not have 'live' monitors in the first place.

The D40, as with all other Digital SLR's does not provide a "picture preview". The monitor displays the picture immediately after the shot.
This actually is Ok because there is less camera shake when holding the camera to your eye. The bright monitor is great for display information and the D40 allows minor adjustments in the camera, before downloading to your PC or printing your pictures.

If you can't use the viewfinder than you don't belong in the slr world. Go back to your kodak handhelds. My d40 is the most amazing camera Ive ever owned and similar cameras from other brands run $$'s more.

I wish they'd just do away with the whole 'viewfinder' thing anyway - I mean, what reason could there possibly be for wanting to see an uninterrupted shot of your subject prior to pressing the shutter when you can look at a little screen on the back. Get on the bus Nikon!
