Simply put, you can't really get that feature anymore unless you do it in a software utility like photoshop. In film cameras, date backs would expose light the film in the form of date and time so it was literally burned into the negative image.

As the digital file is marked by a date and time when it's saved, the use of a date stamp feature in digital cameras has lost popularity amongst camera manufacturers as a feature. There are software utilities that can add a date/stamp on a batch of files, however, google is your friend.

I currently use ASDSEE 4 as my photo proram. After you open the photo to review it you can click on properties on the top menue bar and a drop down will display everything about the photo
ie. camera, focal length of lens, camera program, shutter speed, f stop histogram info, type(jpeg, etc) pixel resolution and much more.

As the Nikon D40 ran the ‘file storage system’ on it’s DS cards it was found that a ‘total flat’ battery would cause the camera to re-date the first file and the LAST file on the card to the date when you re-charge the camera. It is always best to open the file in photoshop and change the exposure date in setting. It is best to remove your storage card from the D40 if you think you will be storing the camera. Though its not a problem I found it to re-date the first file and change the exposure settings. After checking this forum I found it a constant issue with the D40 and hopefully changed with introduction on the D40X.

i had a similar issure with the D40 storage, The camera battery ran flat and after charging it totally wiped the time and date of the exposure and replace the entry file and the exit file with the date or recharge. After contacting the Nikon support line (0800 5559123) they advise it was a write issue on the drive, ie, a software issue. The D40 is regarded as a 'Hobby camera' so should affect many but to store expose details is important. I agree as I change my details in Photoshop and found the first file, around 2 months old to be re-dated and stamped different. a real pain to sort but it can be sorted.
