Zoom range of 55-200mm lens?

I am planning to get a 55-200mm AFS DX VR lens for my D40. Can you please let me know what 'X' of zoom (wrt 35mm) will I get with this lens?
I am not interested either in costlier 300mm lenses or 18-200mm lens. Thanks.

The ' X ' rating actually limits itself to a specific zoom lens.
In this case, a 55 - 200mm lens, when converted, will be 3.6X although people don't normally denote a zoom lens as such except in compact P&S cameras.

So if you want to have an idea, no harm about that, a 55-200mm lens would be about 1.5X to 5.7 X of a 35mm lens, but you probably will have some trouble convincing others what it means to them because we normally don't compare one lens to another on ' X ' rating basis.

Thanks for your reply.
Does that mean that the zoom of this lens is only equivalent to 3.6x zoom of the P&S cameras?

Wont i get 5.7x zoom?

i am confused.

The word Zoom only refers to the changing of focal length within the same lens.

You cannot divide the 200mm of one lens by the 35mm of another and say you are getting 5.7X zoom.
You may say, if you like, my 200mm lens is 5.7 times more powerful than your 35mm lens.

55mm-200mm lens will only give you 3.6X by definition, just like in this advertisement , a 70mm - 300mm zoom lens is described as 4.3 X zoom, not otherwise.

The 55-200mm VR would be a very good zoom range for your D40 as a long telephoto. In old 35mm film range that will look like a 300mm when zoomed out to the 200mm on the digital camera with has a 1.5 crop factor. The VR will be important to you as well when you get into the higher zooms as the vibration reduction system does work very well with this lens. You'll find you can actually with practice shoot at the full 200mm zoom end hand held and get very sharp pictures, even at night when a tripod would be a must in most cases. I've been using the 18-200mm VR lens on a D50 for a while now, and I don't miss my Sigma 70-300mm as the reach of the 18-200mm has been more than adequate in nearly every situation. Combined with your kit lens of 18-55, the 55-200mm will give you the total equivalent of 11.1x zoom (counting both lenses). You can view some of the 200mm handheld shots on my Flickr page if you wish. All handheld, and many zoomed in at 200mm on a D50. Your D40 will actually give a slight edge to your photos due to improved in camera processing on the D40.
