The D40 is a little different in this case than other cameras: most cameras have a switch or dial on the body to choose focus modes, but the D40 does it on the LCD. First things first, make sure your lens barrel switch is set to A, since if it's on M (manual focus) the focus point settings won't work anyhow. Then press Menu, move to the Pencil icon (the Custom Settings menu). You might have to be in a camera mode like P or M for this menu to be active; it may not be available to you if you're in full Auto.

On the Custom Settings menu move to AF (Area Focus). You should see the options to set the focus area there.

If this DOESN'T work or isn't what you want, let me know. I haven't handled the D40 in awhile so this is done by memory!

Hi Brenda,
Many thanks for your message. I just followed your advice: menu > pencil icon > AF - area mode > Single Area Mode. I use Multi Selector to select one of the three focus areas.
Thanks for your time.
Best wishes.
SK.

No worries! I'm glad it worked for you. You might still be able to mark best answer to close it out, if not someone will eventually come along and take care of it. :) The important thing is you found the camera setting!
