I am using a Tamron Macro 90mm lens, and it will only work on manual, but i can't seem to get it onto it ..HELP!?

I am borrowing this Tamron Macro from school to finish my course, and because the D40 does not have the inside motor to work the lens automatically, it needs to be worked through manual, which, in all honesty really does not bother me, I am just having trouble taking it off the auto and using the actual lens with the camera.

If you have any ideas please help! :{
