OK, got the camera; now what's the best software to get? I am interested in shooting RAW.

What software is best for D40x? I would like simplicity but would like to take advantage of RAW.

In my opinion, the best software to edit almost any photo, with the highest ease of use is Adobe Photoshop CS3. This program tends to be more expensive, but is widely used among any field of editing, especially photo editings. There is a RAW plug in for Adobe Photoshop allowing you to import all of your RAW photos, edit them, then convert them into JPEGs afterward. Adobe Photoshop also has the most extensive amount of options than most other software that I have had experience with. If you have any other questions about Adobe, or any other software that might have caught your eye, feel free to ask.

If you don't want to splurge on Photoshop CS3 I would look into Photoshop Elements. It's not as powerful as CS3, but its a whole lot cheaper (found it for $99 CAD) I believe it accepts RAW, although I've never tried. I also find it easier to use than CS3. Most of the commands are exactly the same, but it is more for a home user instead of a professional.

Yes, a Elements is similar to Photoshop, but you just won't get as many bells and whistles. I believe there is also a plug in for Photoshop Elements to use RAW files. If you're just looking for basic editing tools, Elements would be a good solution. Here is the link for the RAW Plug in: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2931 . Hope this helps.

I adree with Adita and Skyler. For serious photo editing, Photoshop is THE way to go. It's not cheap, but the Elements is a good way to get started.
