Can you ever use a sb800 as a remote flash with the D40X?

I have a D40X & a SB800. I know that the D40X doesnt have a commander mode. Just wondering if there is any other way you can use it remotely?

Well, you can get a third party slave trigger which will fire the flash on the SB800 when you flash from the main camera.

So does that mean you need to fire a flash from the camera to trigger the SB800?
Because the D40X has a pop up flash so would i just use that?

That'll work. It works on a the flash hitting it's sensors, and it's amazingly fast. So sure. I'm pretty confident the onboard flash will work. But obviously you want the flash to be slightly askew to the right or left to provide a fill flash. If the flash is too close to the primary flash, there will be too much light localized in one area and therefore washing out the subject. But if you have the main flash and then the slave as a fill off axis (and it's fun to experiment with different angles up down left right, even behind for a nice halo effect).
