Not one disappointment yet!
( - 7/17/06)First, Nikon has always made excellent products. The D50 is no exception. It has a plastic body, slightly smaller lcd screen and uses SD memory instead of CF. There are a few other differesces from it's big brothers, but the biggest is cost. The CCD is the same, this is what captures the image and basically determins the quality capabilities of the camera, as the rest of the Nikon line until you enter into the $2,000+ (body only) pro series. For the serious amature, the D50 will do nicely. Bells and whistles are too much to mention. But, suffice to say, it can be operated in 'Auto' which takes care of everything. Okay, that is a compromise mode, but for the majority of shots it works fine. Buy the Nikon lenses recomended. They are auto-focus and exposure. They are light, compact, inexpensive and run silently. I bought an extra battery, as this is something that has caused me problems with other digitals, but for this camera I suggest that there is no need. Because it is an SLR the LED screen is used for review and detailed file set ups only. Basically, you do not need it in the field. This is the part of any digital camera that sucks the battery dry. Got a few extra bucks after you get it? Invest in the largest SD memory card you can. I purchased a Toshiba 150X (high speed) 4 Gig card. About $97 if you look around. It makes over 1,100 high grade pics. I use the continuous shot option. It is what used to be refered to as a 'motor drive' on the old film cameras which allows many high quality exposures in rapid succession. Outstanding for sports or any action. This eats memory, but with 1,100 exposures, who cares?
Bottom line, the camera is simple enough for the kids to make good photos with easily, yet allows dad and maybe mom the chance to become a sophisticated photographer with capabilities you need not appologize for. I got my D50 by internet at ABE's of Maine. Fast, excellent price, decent shipping costs and all packaging and warrenties supplied. No, I don't work there, it's just when a merchant does the job properly I like to give them credit.
Buy the D50, you will not be sorry.
